Day 1

Arrival & Old City Orientation
Arrive at Istanbul Airport and take a private coach transfer to your centrally located hotel in the Sultanahmet or Karaköy area. After check-in, kickstart your adventure with a self-guided walking tour of the Historic Peninsula. Explore Sultanahmet Square, the vibrant centre of ancient Constantinople, and visit key landmarks such as the Hippodrome, Obelisk of Theodosius, and the German Fountain. Take part in architectural sketching and observation exercises to deepen your understanding of Istanbul’s rich history. Day 2

Byzantine & Ottoman Icons
Start your day with a visit to the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia, where you'll marvel at its innovative domes, pendentives, and mosaics, reflecting the monumental shifts in religion and politics. Then, head to the Blue Mosque to study the symmetry of its courtyard and the intricacy of its tilework, offering a fascinating insight into Ottoman mosque architecture. In the afternoon, explore Topkapi Palace, once the seat of the Ottoman sultans, delving into its pavilions, harem quarters, and stunning decorative arts, while considering the integration of space and cultural aesthetics. Conclude the day with a visit to the Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by the great Mimar Sinan, and take in panoramic views over the Golden Horn. In the evening, enjoy free time or take an optional stroll through the Arasta Bazaar beneath the Blue Mosque.
Day 3

Modernism, Adaptive Reuse & Urban Identity
In the morning, take a ride on the historic Tünel funicular to Beyoğlu, then embark on a walking tour through Galata and Karaköy, where 19th and 20th-century façades reveal Neoclassical and Art Nouveau influences. Explore adaptive reuse projects, such as converted banks, warehouses, and residences, and stop at the iconic Galata Tower for panoramic views of the city (optional entry). In the afternoon, visit Istanbul Modern, housed in a striking Renzo Piano-designed building, to explore its innovative use of materials and modernist forms by the waterfront. Next, discover Salt Galata, an architectural transformation of an Ottoman bank into a vibrant public space for art and libraries, with free public access. In the evening, unwind with free time or take an optional Bosphorus ferry ride, enjoying the stunning shoreline and cityscape.
Day 4

Vernacular & Everyday Architecture
On the final day, begin with a visit to the charming Balat and Fener neighbourhoods, where you’ll explore vibrant wooden Ottoman houses, Greek Orthodox heritage, and winding narrow streets. This is a perfect opportunity for sketching and analysing the mix of architectural styles in these historic residential areas. Stop for a coffee break at one of the area's historic cafés. In the afternoon, enjoy free time for final sketching or visit a local museum, such as the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, to round off your architectural exploration. Later, transfer to the airport for your return flight, taking with you a deeper understanding of Istanbul's diverse urban landscape.
