Your travel itinerary could look like...
AM – Flights to Berlin
Arrive at the airport in plenty of time for your flights to Berlin.
PM – TV Tower
Nestled in the heart of the city, this towering structure stands as both a technological marvel and a symbol of the ideological division that defined the Cold War era. The TV Tower’s strategic location in East Berlin serves as a poignant reminder of the stark contrast between East and West during this tumultuous period in history. After exploring the TV Tower allow yourself some free time before meeting up for a meal nearby at Der Alte Fritz.
AM – Walking tour & DDR Museum
In the morning you will meet up with an arranged tour guide as they take you on a 2 hour walking tour of the East Side of Berlin as you learn about its Soviet past amongst tales of resilience and perseverance in a city once divided. At the end of the tour you can explore what every day life was like in East Germany during the Cold War with a visit to the DDR Museum. Nestled along the banks of the Spree River, this living museum offers a vivid portrayal of daily life in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Stepping into its interactive exhibits, be transported back in time, gaining first-hand insight into the everyday realities, culture, and societal norms that shaped the lives of East Germans. The DDR Museum serves as a poignant testament to the resilience, creativity, and the poignant struggles faced by individuals in a divided city, adding yet another layer to our comprehension of Cold War history in Berlin.
PM – German lessons and Potsdamer Platz
Following a morning exploring take some time to brush up on your German language skills with a lesson courtesy of Inlingua Language School. After the lesson feel free to take some time to discover the nearby Potsdamer Platz. A once military transport hub, it is now the commercial hub of the city, with plenty to explore.
In the evening convene at the Hard Rock Café for dinner before retiring back to your accommodation.
AM – Brandenburg Gate & Holocaust Museum
Start your last full day in Berlin off with trip to the famous Brandenburg Gate, an emblem of unity and peace in the middle of Berlin. From there carry on to a profoundly important destination, the Holocaust Memorial. Wander through this hauntingly beautiful labyrinth of concrete slabs, each one representing the lives lost during one of humanity’s darkest moments. Allow yourself to feel the weight of history as you walk around this poignant display of reflection on the collective responsibility to remember and honour the past.
PM – Olympic Stadium tour & Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
In the afternoon take a tour of the city’s Olympic Stadium, a monument of both sporting prowess and a troubled past. From there take a transfer to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.
Located just outside Berlin, this haunting site served as a model for other Nazi concentration camps and witnessed unspeakable atrocities. As you step through the gates, the palpable sense of solemnity surrounds you. Guided by the echoes of the past, explore the barracks, memorial sites, and remnants of a bygone era. Sachsenhausen stands as a stark reminder of the resilience of the human spirit amid unimaginable adversity.
